From an early age, Fred demonstrated a strong work ethic, taking on jobs such as delivering newspapers, setting pins in a bowling alley, and working at a parts store. At the age of 17, Fred left his senior year of high school to enlist in the United States Air Force. In 1962, he was selected for Officer Candidate School at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas, and was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in March 1963.
