Texas actor embracing new career at age most retire

  • February 24, 2026

TYLER, Texas (KLTV) – One Texas businessman traded his semi-retired life for a surprising second act in Hollywood working on multiple television shows written by “Yellowstone” creator Taylor Sheridan.

Actor Larry Wells, a 64-year-old entrepreneur from Coppell, found his way into the entertainment business after being discovered at Tractor Supply, where he appeared in several commercials as an authentic customer before becoming Tractor Supply’s official spokesperson.

“I semi-retired about five or six years ago, and being a regular shopper at Tractor Supply and buying things like horse feed there, and welding supplies and that sort of thing, I get a call from an agent one day who said Tractor Supply would like for you to be in a video.”

Wells said after filming a commercial, the company then asked him to appear in print advertising for its men’s clothing line, which led to additional voiceover work as Tractor Supply’s official spokesperson.

His agent then told him to audition for a western in Fort Worth.

“I reached out and made a few phone calls, and, lo and behold, they offered me to be Sam Elliott’s traveling stand-in,” Wells said.

Wells initially rejected the offer, but then he was given an offer he couldn’t refuse: a featured role with Billy Bob Thornton.

“Being green and new to the game, I was a little overwhelmed to say the least,” Wells admitted. “I had a few of those ‘aha’ moments where I look around and here I am rubbing elbows with Sam Elliott, Tim McGraw, Billy Bob Thornton, and I’m like, ‘How did I get here?’”

Wells appeared in the Paramount+ series “1883” and “1923,” both written by Sheridan.

He is currently filming the East Texas-based film “Anderson County,” a tribute to fallen game wardens, where he plays Samuel Loving, president of the Cattlemen’s Association.

Beyond the big screen, Wells has also appeared in faith-based videos with Palestine-based prison minister Justin Todd Harrod, including “The Power of a Second Chance,” which won the CMA’s Video of the Year.

With a budding new career, Wells encouraged other senior citizens not to give up on life.

“I was pretty comfortable, semi-retired, had a successful business and just getting to kick back a little bit,” he said. “But I’ve learned that kicking back ain’t always good for you.”

Wells said all of his recent work is a reason to stay healthy and fit.

“I encourage any of the seniors out there, or people that are just kind of coasting through life to step out of that comfort zone,” he said. “Get out there, and try it. I’m living proof. If I can do it, anybody can do it.”
