Pantego reinstates UPAC’s permits after community support rallies against initial revocation, allowing the dance studio’s reopening amid the shooting investigation.
PANTEGO, Texas — The Town of Pantego reversed its decision Tuesday, reinstating the certificates of occupancy for United Performing Arts Company (UPAC) just hours after a standing-room-only crowd packed Pantego Town Hall in a show of support for the longtime dance studio.
The city had revoked the studio’s occupancy permits days earlier following a Feb. 13 shooting that occurred outside the business after a private, late-night event. Neighbors said the shooting happened after that event.
Pantego police have released few details about the incident and have not said whether anyone was injured.
In a letter dated Feb. 24, city officials notified the property owner and tenant that the revocation of the certificates of occupancy for 2014 and 2018 Roosevelt Drive had been rescinded in full. The letter states the referenced certificates “are reinstated,” and includes an apology for the inconvenience. City officials also noted that criminal investigations related to the Feb. 13 incident are ongoing and thanked the parties for their cooperation.
The decision clears the way for UPAC to resume operations at its regular location.
The studio confirmed the development in a social media post, telling families, “Welcome back, UPAC! We will see everyone tonight at our regular location!” The post thanked the community for “overwhelming support, love, and passion for the arts,” adding, “Let’s get back to doing what we love!”
Before the reversal, several residents had questioned the city’s initial decision, arguing it created uncertainty for small businesses. UPAC owner Angie Meister hired an attorney to challenge the action. Her attorney, William King, sent a letter to city leaders asking them to “reverse that wrongful decision,” citing concerns about a lack of evidence and due process.
Meister made an emotional plea during the meeting.
“Help us get back to work. Help us heal through the arts,” she said.
With the certificates of occupancy now reinstated, UPAC says it is reopening immediately as the investigation into the shooting continues.
