Fire Danger Peaks Tuesday

  • February 25, 2026

LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – A Fire Weather Warning, also known as a Red Flag Warning, is in effect for Tuesday as elevated fire weather conditions return to the area. We can expect critically dry conditions, strong winds, and near record-breaking warmth, all of which will contribute to a significant fire threat.

Monday Night

Breezy and not as cold tonight. Under a mostly fair sky, temperatures will drop into the 30s. Milder than Monday morning when lows generally were in the 20s, with a few colder locations in the far northwestern viewing area in the teens and some locations in the far southeastern viewing area near freezing.

Breezy south to southwesterly winds will average around 10 to 20 mph.

Tuesday’s Fire Danger

A Red Flag, or Fire Weather, Warning will be in effect from 11 AM through 7 PM Tuesday. The dry air (low relative humidity), relatively dry fuels, brisk wind, and very warm afternoon temperatures, will create conditions primed for rapid fire spread.

Temperatures will soar into the 80s, potentially near record highs, under a sunny – but likely dusty – sky. Strong southwest winds will increase to 15 to 25 mph with gusts around 35 mph.

Avoid any outdoor burning or activities that may spark a fire. Do not engage in activity that may involve an open flame. Make sure tow chains can’t drag on pavement, which might generate sparks. Don’t drive your vehicle over dry vegetation, which a hot exhaust system may ignite. Of course, never discard cigarettes from your vehicle.
