SAN MARCOS, Texas — UTSA baseball suffered its first loss of the season to Texas State University 7-2 on Tuesday at Bobcat Ballpark.
The Roadrunners (7-1) looked uncomfortable from the jump. The Bobcats (6-2) made quick work of UTSA starting pitcher, senior Christian Okerholm, forcing him off the bump after just 1.1 innings pitched. Texas State’s rotation racked up 14 strikeouts against one of the hottest offenses in the nation, holding UTSA to just two runs after they scored 10 or more in the first seven games.
“Texas State played really good,” coach Pat Hallmark said after the game. “We didn’t do enough with the bats, but I don’t think we played bad. Texas State just played really good.”
Texas State struck first in the opening inning with an RBI single from infielder Manny Salas and a sacrifice fly from designated hitter Jaquae Stewart. In the next inning, Bobcats catcher Chris Namken launched a two-run home run over the right-field wall, effectively ending Okerholm’s day.
“He was fine. He did what we asked him to do, which was throw strikes,” Hallmark said of his starting pitcher. “They did a good job. They were better. You’ve got to tip your hat to Texas State.”
Senior pitcher James Hubbard came in for Okerholm and held Texas State in check for two innings before Hallmark pulled him in favor of freshman pitcher Christopher Gutierrez.
After Gutierrez’s brief appearance, freshman pitcher Jake Qualia took to the mound in relief. Qualia gave up a two-run double to Bobcats outfielder Tanner Carson in the fifth and a solo shot to Stewart in the seventh.
The Roadrunners’ first score of the night came in the sixth after senior outfielder Drew Detlefsen launched a home run over left-center field. In the eighth, sophomore utility Caden Miller scored from third on a wild pitch, but UTSA was unable to muster up any offensive production after.
“[Texas State pitcher Sam Hall’s] stuff is really good,” Hallmark said regarding his team’s struggles at the plate. “Sometimes hitting is like that. It’s not easy to just keep getting hits like we’ve been doing. I’ve been very impressed with our hitting.
“If there is anything to be critical about, it’d be taking pitches to hit in early counts and chasing late in counts. Maybe. I’m not even sure about that, though.”
Junior outfielder Lane Haworth led the team in hits with three as UTSA tallied a season-low of seven; Detlefsen had the team’s lone RBI. Okerholm received the loss on the mound after allowing three earned runs. The Roadrunners had one walk.
UTSA will head to Houston, Texas, for game one of the Bruce Bolt College Classic against Ohio State University at 11:05 a.m. Friday at Daikin Park.
