Central Texas political parties react to State of the Union address

  • February 25, 2026

WACO, Texas (KWTX) – Central Texans tuned in for the State of the Union address, on both sides of the aisle, to hear what President Trump had to say about his first year back in office.

Trump started by calling this the “golden age of America.” He explained that he took on a country that was falling apart and after one year, he says it has been a turnaround for the ages.

Hot topics for the president consistently include the economy and the border, and that’s where he started.

Donna Mick, the Vice Chair of the McLennan County Republican Party, says the numbers coming from the border are staggering.

“The border is the most secure, it is completely secure. And what stood out to me, that I feel is the most important for our nation is that fentanyl going across is down by 56%.The border is more secure now than it has been in 125 years and that’s very good for our nation,” she says.

Mick adds that the speech has her hopeful for the next three years.

On the other side of the aisle, Mark Hays with the Bell County Democratic Party had a lot to say about Trump’s comments on the economy.

He says that lower and middle class Americans aren’t feeling higher wages for cheaper groceries, and that many of those financial decisions are only beneficial to a specific tax bracket.

“The wage growth that he talks about is uneven. It does more favors for higher incomes. Similarly with the tax cuts, even though he mentions a couple of things like no tax on tips, overall most the wages are in higher income groups. And this is the problem we have where the distribution of wealth has gotten wildly higher with higher income people,” he says.

Hays urges anyone who doesn’t feel satisfied with what they are hearing or seeing to go out and vote because that is how you fight for change.
