Exploring the outdoors in Lubbock can be a little dull, especially if you like outdoorsy activities like hiking, kayaking, camping, etc. However, if you are willing to travel a little bit, there are great areas to explore nature in beautiful settings. Here are some day trips for the outdoor adventurer, in order of distance.

Buffalo Springs Lake (Very Close)

Lake Alan Henry (About 1 Hour Away)

Less than an hour southeast of Lubbock, Lake Alan Henry is a favorite for boating, kayaking, and fishing. Known for its clear water and bass fishing, the lake offers a peaceful change of scenery from the flat plains around town. There are hiking trails along the shoreline and plenty of spots to picnic. White River Lake (About 1.25 Hours Away)

Located northeast of Lubbock near Spur, White River Lake is a laid-back destination for fishing, boating, and camping. The smaller crowds make it ideal for a quiet day outdoors. The surrounding landscape offers wide open views and plenty of space to relax. Admission fees are here.

Palo Duro Canyon State Park (About 1.5 Hours Away)

Often called the Grand Canyon of Texas, Palo Duro Canyon offers hiking, biking, camping, horseback riding, and breathtaking overlooks. The Lighthouse Trail is one of the most popular hikes in the park. Entry fees here.

Known for its dramatic red rock canyons and free-roaming Texas State Bison Herd, this park features scenic hiking trails, mountain biking, horseback riding, and lake activities at Lake Theo. It is a favorite for photographers and wildlife lovers.  For information on fees, head here.

 Carlsbad Caverns National Park (About 3.25 hours Away)

This underground wonder features massive cave chambers, stalactites, stalagmites, and the famous Bat Flight Program in warmer months.
