Unusual February warmth continues

  • February 25, 2026

LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Most of the South Plains experienced wind gusts generally north of 30 mph throughout Tuesday late morning through late Tuesday afternoon. Blowing dust made another appearance since we’ve been rather dry over the last few weeks.

Today’s Fire Weather Warnings, or Red Flag Warnings, expired at 7 p.m. this evening.

TONIGHT

Winds slowed through the evening hours and will decrease to more of a light breeze of around 10-15 mph for most of us. Overnight lows will remain rather mild in the mid to upper 40s, staying about 15-20 degrees above our average for this time of year of 31 degrees.

Skies remain clear with most of the airborne dust settling overnight.

TOMORROW (Wednesday)

Unseasonably warm temperatures return for a second day in a row as we expect to get close to record highs in the low to mid 80s by the afternoon. Winds will not be as strong, slowing to a light breeze of around 10 to 15 mph out of the northwest.

A cold front approaches heading into Wednesday night/Thursday morning which will bring with it a shift in winds and a slight drop in temperatures for Thursday and Friday.

UPCOMING WEATHER PATTERN

It’s an up-and-down forecast as we push into the next 5 to 7 days, but not dramatically so.

It is a dominantly warm forecast for this time of year, swapping between the 70s and 80s heading into the weekend and even early next week. Not much rain to speak of for now but we could be eyeing some changes as we push into the first few days of March.

TODAY IN WEATHER HISTORY: February 24th

In 2000, the South Plains experienced an early-season round of severe thunderstorms. Hail up to golf-ball size (1.75″ diameter) and wind gusts of up to 60mph were seen across portions of the area. This was notable simply because before this event, the South Plains had only seen 5 total severe weather reports in the entire month of February. This single event saw 18 separate reports of hail and strong winds!
