GILLESPIE COUNTY, Texas — The Nebo Mountain Fire in Gillespie County is now 40% contained at an estimated 1,160 acres, according to the Texas A&M Forest Service.

The fire was 25% contained as of Tuesday, the Forest Service estimating the fire’s size at 250 acres. Officials say the increase in acreage on Wednesday was due to more accurate mapping.

“The terrain out here is steep and difficult to access,” Fredericksburg Fire/EMS Chief Lynn Bizzell said. “Because of that, we relied on Texas A&M Forest Service aircraft earlier today to slow the fire’s spread, and our ground crews will continue to work through the night to increase containment and stop the forward progression.”

The Gillespie County Emergency Operations Center has been activated in support of fighting the fire. A disaster declaration has been issued to the state to request additional fire suppression resources and tools, according to Fredericksburg and Gillespie County Emergency Management.

Fire crews are continuing to build a containment line, the Forest Service saying that most of the fire’s activity is well-interior to the fire’s edge.
