Lubbock-raised filmmaker brings ‘Matter of Time’ to theaters nationwide this weekend

  • February 26, 2026

LUBBOCK, Texas (KJTV) – A Lubbock-raised filmmaker is opening his first narrative film in theaters nationwide this weekend, including at Premiere Cinemas in Lubbock.

“Matter of Time,” written and directed by Jeremy Snead, follows a video game designer who gets hold of a powerful ring that can control time. The film was shot in the Dallas area.

Snead was born in Levelland and grew up in Lubbock, so this is a full-circle moment.

“I never would have imagined — being a filmmaker, number one, but number two having a movie in theaters in my hometown,” Snead said.

He remembers when he got the itch to start making movies.

“If I had to pick one, it would be watching behind the scenes of Walt Disney,” Snead said. “He’d sit on the edge of his desk and tell you, ‘this is how we brought Bambi to life.’”

Snead went on to direct documentaries about video games before making “Matter of Time”, his first narrative feature.

“It’s got video games, it’s got science fiction, it’s got Sean Astin,” Snead said.

Sean Astin and the ring connection

Astin is a longtime friend of Snead’s. The actor is known for playing Samwise Gamgee in the “Lord of the Rings” films — a role that also centered on a powerful ring.

Snead said getting Astin on board required clearing a key hurdle.

“The barrier to entry was Sean Astin signing off on the script,” Snead said.

Astin acknowledged the overlap.

“I remember reading the script and asking Jeremy, ‘Does it have to be a ring?’” Astin said.

Snead said he hopes families will turn out for the opening weekend.

“To see ‘Matter of Time’ in a theater with an audience is very rewarding,” Snead said. “I’m excited to see what people think about it.”

The movie is playing at Premiere Cinemas in Lubbock.
