AUSTIN, Texas — Drivers in Austin should expect nightly lane closures and detours at the US 290 East and I-35 interchange beginning Thursday as crews make bridge joint repairs, the Texas Department of Transportation said.
Starting Feb. 26, TxDOT will close the westbound US 290 East to southbound I-35 flyover each night from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. through mid-March.
Closures will take place Sunday through Thursday nights, with the flyover reopening each morning by 5 a.m.

Drivers on westbound US 290 East will be detoured to the I-35/Waco exit and directed to turn left at the intersection to access southbound I-35. Detour signs will be posted, and delays are expected.
Once repairs are complete on the westbound to southbound flyover, crews will shift to the northbound I-35 to eastbound US 290 East flyover. TxDOT said additional closure details for that phase will be announced at a later date.
The repairs are needed because bridge joints on both flyovers have expanded beyond their intended design range. TxDOT said it has monitored the bearing pads and joints for several years and stressed the issue does not pose a safety concern.
A repair contract was awarded in 2025 to AAD Contracting Inc. at a cost of $768,000.
