WalletHub analyzed the 100 largest U.S. cities using nine key metrics, including average credit score, the year-over-year change in bankruptcy filings (September 2025 vs. September 2024) and the share of residents with accounts in distress.

Four Texas cities landed in the top 10.

Per the WalletHub study, four Texas cities ranked in the top 10 of most financially distress metros in the U.S. 

Other Texas cities included Fort Worth at No. 12 and El Paso and No. 27. 

WalletHub evaluated cities across six primary categories:

An account is considered in distress if it is in forbearance or has deferred payments.

Each city received a weighted overall score based on those metrics and was ranked accordingly.
