Five suburbs in North Texas made the cut in a top 10 list of safest cities in Texas.
The survey by SafeWise, a company that provides home security and safety insights, looked at violent crimes, property crimes and natural disasters.
The annual State of Safety report uses FBI crime data as well as survey data on how safe residents feel.
Trophy Club ranked No. 1 on the list of safest Texas cities. Colleyville, population 26,000, ranked ninth.
According to the survey 49% of Texans say they feel safe in the state, which is a 7% increase from last years 42%. However, Texas residents still have a higher rate of concern compared to the rest of the country.
The survey found incidents of violent crime in Texas were 4.44 per 1,000 people, similar to the national rate of 4.43. In last year’s report, Texas had a crime rate of 5.1 per 1,000 people.
“Nearly half (49%) of Texans say they feel safe in their state, which is higher than the previous year’s confidence level of 42%,” the survey found. “However, Texans still feel less safe than the average American, as the national average is 52%.”
Over the recent years there has been a huge increase of people moving to the state from across the country because of the standard of living including no state income tax, cost of homes and the economic growth that stems from the energy, technology, manufacturing and aerospace industries.
“We moved here this year to escape an area that had been overcome by violence. We chose an area known for peace and quiet,” a Texas resident said in a quote on SafeWise’s website.
The top 10 cities come from a group of 343 cities who met the criteria for the survey, and Colleyville is the only city in the top 10 list to have a murder reported.
