Arlington police are investigating a Feb. 18 crash involving a school bus that killed a 67-year-old bicyclist, the department said in a news release Wednesday.
According to the release, an Arlington ISD bus was trying to make a right-hand turn from Treecrest Drive onto the Interstate 20 frontage road when a man on a bicycle approached the intersection. The rider, who wasn’t wearing a helmet, was thrown off in the collision and critically injured.
The bus driver immediately stopped, called 911 and tried to help the injured rider, police said. The four high school students on the bus were not injured.
The bicyclist, William Roberts, died in the ICU trauma unit at Medical City Arlington hospital the following day, according to the Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office. His official cause and manner of death are pending the results of an autopsy.
A spokesperson for Arlington Independent School District said in a statement that the district is cooperating fully with the police investigation. The driver resigned following the incident.
“Out of respect for the ongoing investigation and student privacy, we are not able to share additional details,” the statement reads.
No criminal charges have been filed against the bus driver at this time, police said in the release. The investigation into the fatal accident is ongoing.
