Rent may be set in a certain time and place among a specific group of people, but it must have a timeless quality because Jonathan Larson’s groundbreaking musical, loosely based on Puccini’s 1896 opera La bohème, keeps getting produced.

While we wait for Circle Theatre’s full mounting of the show in the spring, the AT&T Performing Arts Center is presenting Rent in Concert on Tour on March 4 at the Majestic Theater, the Broadway-level cast singing from behind podiums.

Thirty years ago, Rent reinvigorated the musical with catchy tunes like “Seasons of Love,” “La Vie Bohème,” “Light My Candle,” “One Night Glory” and “Out Tonight” and a story focused on young, down-and-out artists in late 1980s, early ’90s New York.

Winner of the Pulitzer Prize and four Tony Awards, it follows a year in the life of Roger, Mimi, Mark, Angel, Tom, Maureen, Joanne and Benny, ambitious, starving artists in the bohemian East Village at the height of the AIDS crisis.
