The long-running music series, known for spotlighting live performances, is back with plans billed as “bigger and better than ever.” Producer Emily Bolf joined Trevor Scott in the studio with several topics on deck, including a look back at Austin City Limits’ legacy and history.
“A lot of people are really familiar with the festival now, especially some of the younger generations. But really, it all tracks back to 1974,” shared Bolf, “Austin PBS, which was called KLRN, or KLRU at the time, was just a small PBS station, and wanted to start a music program that really recognized the music scene that was happening here in the 70s. So Willie Nelson taped the pilot episode on October 17th, 1974, and from there, the show just evolved from showcasing Austin and Texas music to bringing in Ray Charles and these incredible artists from all over the world. And so now we showcase every genre imaginable.”

Austin City Limits has released a peek at a few of the artists taking the famed stage for tapings during season 52.
“We are really thrilled to kick off our new season on March 19th with Grammy Award-winning R&B artist Miguel,” shared Bolf. “He actually did a taping with us back in season 44, so it’s hard to believe it’s been eight years, but he will be bringing his Chaos Tour back to Austin City Limits, and we are really excited to kick off the season with him.”

Season 52 also includes an expanded format. This year’s series will focus on one singular artist per hour-long episode. Producers wanted to ensure that fans are treated to a comprehensive performance. It’s one of the most sought-after tickets in town, but Austin PBS always makes sure to include music fans in the fun.
“We do giveaway taping passes for free to every taping. People just need to go to our website, acltv.com. And we also post it on social media about a week before each taping, we’ll open a lottery. So you just sign up for the lottery. We email the winners a few days before the taping, and you can come to our tapings for free.”
