Central Texas drivers can expect to see a bump in gas prices as pumps transition to a summer-blend of gasoline.

TEMPLE, Texas — Gas prices across Texas have seen an uptick since last Thursday, according to the AAA Texas Weekend Gas Watch.

As of Feb. 26, the average Texas gas price is 2.61 per gallon for regular unleaded fuel. That price is six cents more than a week ago and 10 cents more than compared to this day last year.

Cost differences between parts of the state is span 23 cents. El Paso drivers pay the most on average at $2.86 per gallon, while drivers in Lubbock are paying the least at $2.43 per gallon, according to a survey. The national average price for a gallon of regular unleaded is $2.98, which is five cents more compared to this day last week and 15 cents less when compared to Feb. 26, 2025.

The seasonal increase in gas prices is beginning to take shape as refineries move to produce summer-blend gasoline. More expensive to produce, the summer-blend fuel contains additional components designed to reduce evaporation in warmer temperatures. At the same time, gas demand is expected to rise as spring break travel increases in the coming weeks.

“Now that we’re approaching spring driving season, it’s typical to see gas prices begin their annual climb,” said Daniel Armbruster, AAA Texas spokesperson. “The switch to summer-blend gasoline and the anticipated increase in travel demand are key factors pushing prices higher. There’s the potential for some additional upward movement at the pump in the weeks ahead.”

A small increase per gallon seems minimal, but drivers should expect overall costs to grow as the weather becomes warm.
