Back in April of 2025 I was writing an article that had the headline,”The measles outbreak in El Paso just got way more serious. Five new cases were confirmed, bumping the city’s total to 18.”
Fast forward to today and local news outlets are now reporting that El Paso health officials are tracking a total of 17 confirmed measles cases in the area and thirteen of those cases are connected to the Camp East Montana Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention facility.
Because the detention center falls under federal jurisdiction, those cases are reported through federal authorities. However, the El Paso Department of Public Health says it is coordinating closely with federal partners and supporting testing and vaccination efforts to help prevent additional spread.

How Measles Can Spread
Measles spreads through coughing and sneezing and can remain in the air for up to two hours after an infected person leaves an area. Early symptoms typically include fever, cough, runny nose, and red eyes, followed by a rash that begins on the face and spreads downward.
Residents, particularly young adults, are encouraged to review their vaccination records and schedule immunization if their status is uncertain.
