WASHINGTON, February 28, 2026: At around midnight (03:00EST), Donald Trump announced on social media that the United States military “began major military operations in Iran.” Trump added that the objective is “to defend the American people by eliminating imminent threats from the Iranian regime, a vicious group of very hard terrible people.”
The Trump administration argues that Iran continues to rebuild its nuclear capacity ignoring calls to halt them. The U.S. has prepared for a “massive and ongoing operation,” according to Trump’s online post. Trump has warned that the “lives of courageous American heroes may be lost and we may have casualties, but” he added, “we’re doing this for the future.”
Early indications are that the U.S. is targeting Iranian missile sites and naval fleets.
Israel’s Benjamin Netanyahu also confirmed that Israel has joined in the military operations against Iran. Isreal destroyed the home of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei according to satellite images being shared on social media.
Iran has begun retaliating. Immediately after the U.S. begun combat operations, an Iranian ballistic missile exploded at the U.S. Navy’s 5th Fleet headquarters in Bahrain. There are no details yet about casualties and damage in Bahrain.
Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) posted on social media soon after the attacks began that the attacks are “acts of war unauthorized by Congress.” Ruben Gallego (D-AZ) also posted on social media that “the Iranian people deserve freedom and dignity,” adding “but we cannot send our men and women to die at the whim of the President.”
