It may not feel quite like fall in El Paso yet, but our pumpkins are really thriving! As we approach Halloween, El Paso porches are about to be covered in jack-o’-lanterns, gourds, and those giant pumpkins that somehow melt into goo by November. But how long can our pumpkins actually survive the Texas sun?
According to a new national study, El Paso pumpkins are actually built kind of tough. The Sun City ranked #8 overall in the U.S. for pumpkin survival, proving that even our Halloween décor can handle a little heat.
The Study Behind the Pumpkins
The playful “Pumpkin Longevity Index” comes from a Casino.org study that used data from Crime Data Explorer, WeatherSpark, and Google Trends to find out which cities have the best shot at keeping pumpkins fresh through spooky season.

Researchers looked at everything from weather patterns (warmth, humidity, rainfall) to pest and crime rates, and even how much each city gets into the Halloween spirit by searching for seasonal events and decorations online.
El Paso’s Ranking: A Strong Showing Despite the Heat
El Paso scored a total of 75.25 out of 100, landing us solidly in the top 10 nationwide. The only thing keeping us from ranking even higher? The heat.
According to the data, our October temps aren’t exactly pumpkin-friendly, giving El Paso a below-average 59/100 in the weather category. Still, the study notes that with some TLC- like keeping pumpkins shaded, dry, and away from direct sunlight- they can last up to 16 days on your doorstep. That’s long enough to make it through Halloween without turning into mush!
Where El Paso really shines is in areas that matter most. El Paso’s Property Crime Score came in at an almost-perfect 99.49/100, meaning porch pirates and pumpkin vandals are rare around here; well, at least the pumpkin vandals, because porch pirates are definitely not looking for your pumpkins.
Among Texas cities, El Paso stands tall (and orange). The study found that while other parts of Texas may have milder fall temps, few can match our mix of low crime, strong Halloween enthusiasm, and porch-proud pumpkin care.
So go ahead, carve that jack-o’-lantern early. Your El Paso pumpkin has what it takes to survive the Texas heat and make it all the way to Halloween night.
