Austin police said the suspected shooter was killed during an exchange of gunfire with law enforcement.

AUSTIN, Texas — Three people were killed and at least 14 others were injured in a shooting early Sunday morning in downtown Austin, authorities said.

Austin police responded to reports of a man shooting at Buford’s bar on West Sixth Street around 1:59 a.m. Central time. 

Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis said three officers returned fire, killing the suspected shooter.  

Fourteen people were brought to nearby hospitals, and two others were pronounced dead on scene. Three of those hospitalized remained in critical condition.

Federal investigators are assisting local law enforcement, and police said the evidence scene will take several hours to process.

The FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force has joined the investigation based on preliminary evidence found on the scene. The shooter is believed to have used a pistol and an assault rifle in the attack. 

“I am very thankful for the speed with which our public safety officials responded to this,” Austin Mayor Kirk Watson said Sunday morning. “I don’t think there’s any question that it saved lives.” 

Watson said he will continue to update the public throughout the day as more details become available.
