ALBUQUERQUE — Houston Christian University was nipped by University of New Mexico 3-2 in the finale of the UNM Invitational on Sunday afternoon at Lobo Softball Complex. The Lobos rallied with two runs in the fifth to slip past the Huskies, ending HCU’s run through pre-conference tournament action.
Â
The Lobos managed to scratch across the game’s first run in the third, getting an RBI single through the left side by Mya Pacheco, scoring Gabrielle Briones to take a 1-0 lead.
Â
HCU clawed back in front in the fourth. Raenna Liscano walked with one out and moved to second on a single through the left side by Leah Hammack. Heidi Maytum followed with a single up the middle to score Liscano and knot the game at one-apiece.
Â
Jade Moreno then welcomed a pitching change with an RBI single through the left side, scoring Hammack, and along with Maytum moved up a bag on an error. Ella Herrewig walked to load the bases with just one out, but the Huskies couldn’t push any more across the dish following back-to-back groundouts.
Â
In the fifth, it was Briones again, this time doubling to the gap in right center to score Jessica DeLeon, who had walked to lead off the frame. That hit tied things at two before Briones crossed with the go-ahead run on an RBI single by pinch-hitter Ella Dawson up the middle, giving the Lobos the lead on the final tally of the contest.
Â
Jade Moreno went 2-3 with an RBI and Heidi Maytum was 1-3 with an RBI to lead the seven-hit offense for HCU.
Â
Addy Prasifka (0-5) went 4.1 innings and surrendered 10 hits and three runs while striking out five to take the loss.
Â
Briones went 3-3 with a run and RBI while Mya Pacheco and Briana Williams each added two hits for the Lobos (9-9). Caitlin Benningfield (4-3) was the winner, going 3.2 innings of scoreless relief giving up two hits with four strikeouts.
Â
HCU is now 3-16 on the season. The Huskies will return home this weekend for the first Southland Conference series of the season, hosting Northwestern State University on Friday and Saturday. The three-game set at Husky Field is the first of nine conference series, eight on weekends with one mid-week, 27 games in total.
