Colorado Springs police saw gun violence, traffic fatalities and motor vehicle thefts last week, among other incidents, with law enforcement making 318 arrests in El Paso County.
From Feb. 22 to Feb. 28, the Colorado Springs Police Department posted 11 blotter entries to its public database of incidents approved for release. Here is a recap of those entries:
On Monday, just before 1 a.m., a couple was awakened by a woman attempting to get in their home, pounding on their door. The homeowner armed himself with a handgun and barricaded the door when the intruder fired multiple gunshots into their home, narrowly missing the homeowner and their sleeping 5-year-old daughter. Crystal Burke, 33, and Tristan Price, 40, were arrested and face charges of attempted murder, among others.
On Tuesday, police responded to a shots-fired call from the 700 block of Citadel Drive, after suspects were burglarizing a building and allegedly fired multiple rounds at on-duty security guards as they fled in a vehicle. No arrests have been announced.
Also on Tuesday, a motorcyclist died near Union Boulevard at Woodland Hills Drive after a box truck turned left in front of the biker, causing a collision. Police say impairment is not suspected, but speed is being investigated.
On Wednesday, police located two unrelated suspects with outstanding arrest warrants in the area of 300 Iowa Avenue. Taylor Sandford was arrested on a warrant for the theft of over $15,000 in metal from businesses and city parks; Jaquavis Marthrel was arrested on a warrant for identity theft and money laundering.
On Thursday, police received a report of a dead body in the 100 Block of East Vermijo Avenue in downtown Colorado Springs. Officers located a deceased adult male, and the Police Department’s homicide unit took lead on the investigation.

On Tuesday, police located a “prolific retail crime offender” at a local Home Depot, stealing merchandise. Police monitored the suspect as they left the store, who fled the scene when they attempted to apprehend them. Police deployed a tire deflator and located the vehicle, abandoned, with a “significant amount of retail merchandise,” shortly after. No arrests have been announced.
On Wednesday, police responded to a report of a man holding a handgun and attempting to break into an apartment in the 600 block of West Van Buren. Police found that the man, Marcin Bis, was a resident at the complex and allegedly made racially biased comments and threats towards his neighbors. He was arrested and booked at the El Paso County Jail.
Also on Wednesday, Benjamin Bryant, 43, was arrested after a 6-hour standoff following a menacing incident with a baseball bat.
On Thursday, police announced that a sexually violent predator, Larry Kaualeni Abenes, 62, was released to live in the community. Police say anyone with questions regarding the announcement can call 719-444-7672.
On Friday, Mauro Loper, 54, was arrested after allegedly stealing a vehicle from the 3900 block of Loma Vista Point two days prior.
Also on Friday, Nicolas Roberts, 33, was arrested after allegedly stealing a vehicle from the 6000 block of Snowbird Drive. At the time of his arrest, a .380 handgun and felony amounts of narcotics were found in his possession.
