EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14/CBS4) – Tensions overseas escalated after a major attack in Iran, prompting strong reactions from Iranian-Americans in the Borderland, including local supporters in El Paso who say they are closely watching developments and pushing for change.

Community members in El Paso said the latest developments are personal, with many following what is happening overseas and voicing support for what they describe as a movement to free Iran.

Mike Kamali, an organizer of a recent downtown demonstration, said supporters are encouraged by international involvement.

“We’re all excited that the United States and Israel are helping the Iranians to achieve their goal of freeing Iran. So we’re all excited about that,” Kamali said. He added, “And we need to thank President Trump and Prime Minister Netanyahu for their assistance in achieving the goal of a free Iran.”

The attack comes as tensions continue to rise in the region, with national leaders weighing in and the situation still unfolding.

Supporters in El Paso said they believe the latest developments could have a lasting impact on Iran and the broader Middle East, as nationwide debate continues over U.S. policy and the future of Iran.

Earlier this month, community members held a peaceful walk downtown, waving flags and holding signs in support of the Iranian revolution.

The local demonstration came as protests and solidarity events took place across the country, with Iranian-Americans drawing attention to violence and political unrest overseas.

Kamali said he has seen support from Americans beyond the Iranian community. “And we have a lot of Americans that are backing us up. All my friends and even people that I’m receiving emails from, people that I don’t even know,” he said. “They are congratulating us on getting close to our goals.”

Organizers said even small gatherings can send a powerful message that the Iranian community in the Borderland is engaged and standing in solidarity with people overseas.

“These demonstrations are to let the Iranian people know that we are backing them up. We are behind them, and we’re doing what we can to educate others and help them move toward victory,” Kamali said.

Kamali said another peaceful walk is planned for later as community members continue raising awareness and showing support for the end of the Iranian regime.
