Lubbock, Texas – Drivers along I-27 and Loop 289 will see temperatures surge into the upper 80s Tuesday before a late-week storm system brings up to a 50 percent chance of thunderstorms and gusty 30 mph winds by Thursday evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Lubbock, the week begins dry with highs climbing from the upper 50s Monday into the mid to upper 80s Tuesday. Southwest winds will increase to 15 to 25 mph Tuesday afternoon, creating crosswinds along US-84 and US-62 that could affect high-profile vehicles.

Temperatures ease slightly Wednesday, settling into the low to mid-70s with lighter north winds around 5 to 10 mph. The brief cooldown will not last. By Thursday, southerly winds strengthen to 20 to 30 mph, pulling moisture back into the South Plains. Highs rebound into the low to mid-80s, setting the stage for scattered showers and storms late in the day and into the evening.

The strongest storms could develop east of Lubbock along US-87 toward Post and Tahoka, where brief heavy rainfall and lightning may slow travel during the evening commute Thursday. Rain chances continue Friday, ranging from 20 to 40 percent, with highs remaining in the 70s to lower 80s.

Residents should secure loose outdoor items ahead of Thursday’s wind increase and remain weather-aware for rapidly changing conditions late in the week. While widespread severe weather is not guaranteed, isolated storms could produce strong wind gusts and downpours.

Dry conditions dominate through Wednesday, with the first meaningful storm chances arriving Thursday afternoon and lingering into Friday night.
