We Are Blood sent more than 150 blood products to Austin hospitals to help survivors of Sunday’s shooting.
Now those supplies are low and need to be replenished. The blood bank particularly needs donors with O blood types, especially O negative. That blood can be given to a person of any blood type, and that blood is also used for whole blood donations, which are given in Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services’ ambulances and in trauma centers like Dell Seton Medical Center when there is heavy blood loss, such as what happens following a shooting.Â
We Are Blood has a walk-in blood donation clinic at Austin City Hall until 5 p.m. Monday. Parking for donors is free. Donors of all blood types are welcome and needed.
By mid-afternoon Monday, more than 60 people had offered to donate at the downtown site. We Are Blood was hoping to get to 100 on Monday.Â
We Are Blood provides blood for 10 counties and all of the hospitals in the Ascension Seton and St. David’s HealthCare system, as well as Austin-Travis County EMS ambulances.
As the Austin population and medical services has grown, We Are Blood has had to grow its donor base because of an increased need. Already in January, We Are Blood has distributed 8% more red blood cells and 14% more platelets than in January 2025.Â
Blood products do have a shelf life. Platelets have to be used within seven days of collection, 21 days for whole blood and 42 days for red blood cells.Â
