SUNLAND, N.M (KFOX14/CBS4) — The Gadsden School District board has accepted Superintendent Travis Dempsey’s resignation and appointed a new interim superintendent during Thursday’s special board meeting.

During Thursday’s special meeting, trustees accepted Dempsey’s resignation, which will take effect at the end of December, and placed him on administrative leave with pay.

Dempsey announced his decision to retire in a video posted to the district’s Facebook page, where he reflected on his eight years as superintendent.

KFOX14/CBS4 spoke with Dempsey about his tenure as he reflected on his accomplishments.

“Graduation for me always is important. I love participating with our kids and seeing them cross that stage. This last year, we had the largest number of students receiving the bilingual seal.”

The board has now appointed Nubia Tarazona, previously the district’s director of language, equity, and cultural arts, as acting interim superintendent until Dec. 31.

“I’m just really honored to serve my community and my kids and my parents and support continue the great work that we do at Gadsden,” Tarazona told KFOX14/CBS4 on Thursday.

The recent changes come after Gadsden ISD has faced recent challenges, including declining enrollment and budget issues.

The district also has a $75 million bond measure on the November ballot aimed at funding school construction and facility improvement without raising property taxes, according to the district.
