County commissioners unveil a $7.5M expansion of the Medical Examiner’s Office, adding new tech and space inspired by a Fort Bend County facility.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The Nueces County Medical Examiner’s Office officially unveiled its newly expanded and renovated facility, marking the completion of a $7.5 million investment aimed at modernizing operations and improving working conditions for staff.

County leaders, staff, and community members gathered for a ribbon-cutting ceremony celebrating the milestone.

The new building and expansion were spearheaded by Nueces County commissioners. Commissioner Joe A. Gonzalez told 3NEWS the project was inspired by a similar medical examiner facility in Fort Bend County.

Gonzalez said county leaders looked to Fort Bend County as a model for how a modern, efficient medical examiner’s office should operate — focusing on updated technology, improved workflow and better conditions for staff.

Joseph Hayen, Director of Operations at the Medical Examiner’s Office, said one of the most significant upgrades is the addition of LED monitor screens above each autopsy station.

“One of the things we offer now are LED monitor screens above each autopsy station. That is something that we have never had before,” Hayen said. “This allows the doctor to be able to see real time X-ray scans of the patient she is working with. Additionally, she can view scene photos and reports from the investigators.”

As part of the project, the original building will now undergo renovations to become the office’s future administrative headquarters.

County officials say the improvements will help the office better serve Nueces County and surrounding communities for years to come.
