After another successful season of Hot Summer Nights, the Red River Cultural District is bringing the energy back downtown this winter with the return of Free Week, Austin’s beloved admission-free music festival. Taking place Friday, January 9, and Saturday, January 10, 2026, the event will once again transform downtown Austin into a vibrant, walkable winter wonderland filled with live performances, good vibes, and community connection.

For more than two decades, Free Week has been a signature celebration of Austin’s creative spirit, offering fans an opportunity to experience live music from local artists and DJs across multiple genres—all at no cost. The two-day festival takes over some of the city’s most iconic venues along the Red River entertainment district, creating a can’t-miss weekend for music lovers near and far.

Supporting Artists and Strengthening Austin’s Music Economy

While the shows are free to attend, all festival performers are paid, reaffirming the Red River Cultural District’s commitment to sustaining Austin’s live music ecosyste, especially during the slower winter months. Fans are encouraged to give back to the venues and artists by attending shows, grabbing food and drinks, purchasing merch, and tipping venue staff.

“Free Week is a celebration of Austin’s vibrant music community and the local artists and venues that make this city so special,” said Nicole Klepadlo, Executive Director of the Red River Cultural District. “This festival brings people together to explore, discover, and connect through a shared love of live music, creating a weekend that’s as much about community as it is about performances. We can’t wait to continue the tradition in 2026.”

With a multi-genre lineup designed to appeal to every kind of music fan, Free Week offers the perfect opportunity for residents and visitors alike to dive into the heart of Austin’s live music scene and support the people who make it thrive.

A Beloved Austin Tradition with Deep Roots

Founded in 2003 at the legendary Emo’s near 6th and Red River, Free Week began as a small one-day event created to keep clubs open and staff working during the winter lull. Over the past 20 years, it has evolved into a citywide celebration that draws thousands of attendees and features hundreds of local bands each January.

Today, the Red River Cultural District leads the effort to produce the downtown festival, while venues throughout Austin also take part—continuing a tradition that’s inspired similar winter music events nationwide.

Stay tuned for updates in the coming weeks, including venue announcements, performer lineups, maps, schedules, and special promotions.
