COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KBTX) – Texas A&M University and its Qatar campus have responded to recent military action in the Middle East. This includes the Qatar location locking down facilities and shifting to remote operations through the end of the week.
Qatar’s government said its air force shot down two Iranian bombers Monday, escalating tensions in the Persian Gulf.
According to the Texas A&M University System, 330 undergraduate students and 10 graduate students are currently enrolled at the Qatar campus. Eight of the undergraduate students are U.S. citizens. Of the 75 faculty and staff at the campus, 30 are Americans.
When the conflict began, 28 students who were en route from Texas to Doha — Qatar’s capital — were diverted to Istanbul.
In a statement, system officials said the Qatar campus will resume operations remotely through the end of the week and that all facilities are fully locked down.
The university system also made the decision Monday to recall all three College Station students currently studying abroad at the Qatar campus as they can confirm it’s safe to do so.
Texas A&M said it continues to monitor the situation in the Middle East and will act in the best interest of faculty, staff and students.
