WICHITA FALLS, Texas (KCBD) – The losing streak is over for the Lubbock-Cooper Pirates as they edged out the Mavericks from Wichita Falls Memorial 49-42.
Memorial had an early 7-0 lead until Chemain Johnson Jr. jaunted into the end zone on a five-yard carry, which tied up the game. The Pirates took the lead when Johnson did the same thing minutes later in the first- from two yards out and gave Cooper the 14-7 lead.
With the game tied 21-21, LCP QB Ryan Rodriguez lofted the ball to WR Cade Gant for the explosive go-ahead score. Johnson made another goal line score in the third with the help of his teammates. The Pirates would lead 49-21 in the fourth before they staved off a 3TD comeback attempt from the Mavericks.
The win puts Lubbock-Cooper in a better position to contend for a playoff appearance. Next week, they will try to climb the 5A-2 District 2 standings even more as they welcome in Abilene Wylie there at Pirate Stadium.
