Contemporary Art Month, San Antonioâs annual four-week celebration of the arts, gets underway at the Contemporary at Blue Star on this Friday.
Artists, curators and exhibition spaces â traditional and nontraditional â are invited to share their March events on a central calendar from which the public can pick and choose their own self-guided adventure into the creative realm.
For this yearâs opening festivities, the Contemporary offers up two exhibitions based around the theme of community: Roman Francâs Groups Collective and Mini Art Museum, a long-running exhibition project by Mary CantĂș and Gabriela Santiago.
Groups Collective makes use of the medium of photography to document people brought together by geography, common interests and identity in informal images that contest the stodginess of formal portraiture.
The Mini Art Museum features small-scale works by dozens of artists. Work was often displayed in binders with magnifying glasses, encouraging an experience not common in the art world. By using this format, CantĂș and Santiago obliterated the need for a stark white cube to exhibit art, providing an egalitarian platform and encouraging a spirit of intimacy and wonder.
CantĂș died last February at the age of 45. This exhibition is a tribute to the lasting influence she has had on the San Antonio arts community.
Free, 6-9 p.m. Friday, March 6, Contemporary at Blue Star, 16 Blue Star, (210) 227-6960, contemporarysa.org.Â
