A pedestrian was pronounced dead on the scene following the crash on SH 71, close to the Austin airport.
AUSTIN, Texas — Police say a driver who hit and killed a pedestrian in southeast Austin on Sunday morning fled the scene before officers arrived.
According to the Austin Police Department (APD), two vehicles struck the pedestrian around 2:14 a.m. in the 3100 block of State Highway 71 eastbound, close to the Austin airport. The pedestrian was pronounced dead on the scene.
The first vehicle that hit the pedestrian left the scene before police arrived. The driver of the second vehicle remained on the scene, was not impaired and is cooperating with the investigation, police said.

The incident is being investigated as Austin’s 14th fatal crash of 2026, resulting in 14 deaths. On the date of this crash in 2025, eight fatal crashes resulted in eight deaths.
