IRVING, Texas — If you drove southbound Loop 12, Walton Walker, in Irving, on Tuesday afternoon, you likely ran into slow traffic that was not there during the morning commute.

Multiple right lanes were closed between Irving Boulevard and Shady Grove Road from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and congestion built quickly as the day went on. Based on TxDOT camera views around 2 p.m., traffic started slowing near Union Bower and tightened significantly approaching the Shady Grove overpass, where cones narrowed vehicles into fewer lanes.

This is a busy stretch that feeds traffic toward SH-183 and I-30, so losing multiple right lanes, even in the middle of the day, causes congestion. TxDOT crews appear to be doing pavement or shoulder-related maintenance. Equipment and traffic control barrels were staged along the right lanes on Tuesday afternoon.

If Tuesday caught you off guard, here is what you need to know. The same multiple right lane closures are scheduled again on Wednesday, March 4, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Morning and evening rush hours should not be directly impacted. However, late morning through mid-afternoon traffic will likely slow again, especially near Shady Grove.

The weather could make things more complicated.

Tuesday was warm and breezy, which is ideal for road work. Wednesday is expected to be more unsettled. Showers and thunderstorms are in the forecast, and some storms could bring heavy rain and strong wind gusts. If storms move in during the work window, crews may pause operations or temporarily adjust the lane setup.

Drivers should still plan for the closures to be in place unless TxDOT announces changes.

If you experienced delays on Tuesday, expect a similar pattern on Wednesday during the same hours. Plan ahead and give yourself extra time if you need to travel through Irving midday.
