HOUSTON, Texas—A total of eight homeruns (4 for each team) was hit Tuesday night in a McNeese softball 14-9 win over Houston Tuesday night to improve to 16-7 overall. The win over Houston was the second of the season this year after splitting games at the Cajun AC Louisiana Clash two weeks ago.
Corine Poncho, Jada Muñoz, Maddie Taylor, and Alexis Dibbley all led McNeese with two hits apiece. Maddie also picked up the win in relief to improve to 6-1 on the season.Â

McNeese scored 13 runs following a 1-1 tie in the second inning with two runs in the fourth, four in the fifth, one in the sixth and six in the seventh including a grand slam by Nyjah Fontenot, her fourth homerun this season.
The Cowgirls held a 14-5 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh, but Houston scored four runs, two coming from solo homeruns before Ryann Schexnayder got Shelby Taylor to ground out to short to end the game.
Coring Poncho gave McNeese a 1-0 lead in the first inning with a line drive homerun over the centerfield wall for her third homerun of the season.
Houston (14-7) tied the game one apiece on a bases loaded walk in the second inning. After a scoreless third inning, McNeese took the lead for good with two runs in the fourth including Maddie Weeks’ first homerun of the season for a 3-1 Cowgirl lead. The Cougars cut the lead to one run with a single run in the fourth.
A four-run fifth inning by the Cowgirls extended their lead to 7-2 but the Cougars would go on to score three runs in the bottom of the inning to pull to within two runs, courtesy of solo homeruns by Maddie Hartley and Rylee Gardiner.
Alexis Dibbley joined the homerun derby with her second homer of the season, a solo shot over the centerfield wall to put the Cowgirls up 8-5 then Nyjah Fontenot’s grand slam in the seventh was part of a six-run inning for the Cowgirls to extend the lead 14-5. Houston would score four runs in the seventh.
McNeese will return home this weekend to host Lamar in its Southland Conference opening series that will begin with a single game on Friday, March 6 starting at 6 p.m. The series will conclude with a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday.
