Get ready to taste the appetizer of severe weather season in West Texas. ‘Tis the season, and starting Thursday, Lubbock and the South Plains will see severe weather popping up all the way into the panhandle.

Thursday Weather Warnings

According to the National Weather Service, Thursday, March 5, can expect to see an increased chance of severe thunderstorms beginning at 4 p.m. Some of these storms will be able to produce golf ball-sized hail and wind gusts of up to 70 miles per hour.

Don’t forget those umbrellas because a dryline moving east forming from Dimmitt down to Brownfield is creating increased chances of heavy rain from counties eastward and beyond.

What is a Dryline?

During weather events, invisible boundaries that separate moist air from dry air are called drylines. Usually, drylines slowly move eastward during the afternoon before trailing back towards the west at night. Also, during severe weather, tornadic thunderstorms can form along drylines.

Rest of the Week Forecast

Most of West Texas can expect thunderstorms on Thursday, but rain is expected to subside, with a few showers here and there, into the weekend.

As of Wednesday, March 4, thunderstorms are expected to pick back up by Monday, March 9.
