WESLACO – The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) seized more than $83,000 in currency during a recent Operation Lone Star traffic stop in Hidalgo Co.
On Monday, Feb. 23, 2026, just after 4:30 p.m., a DPS Trooper stopped a white 2021 Chevy Tracker on US 281 near Encino for a traffic violation. During a vehicle search, the Trooper discovered several clear plastic bags containing large sums of cash, totaling $83,855.
The driver, Daniel Roel Gomez Quirin, 36, a Mexican national from Reynosa, Tamaulipas, Mexico, was arrested and charged with felony Money Laundering. DPS’ Criminal Investigations Division (CID) continues to investigate this case.
