A 33-year-old man was identified as the driver who died in a crash on Camp Bowie Boulevard in Fort Worth following a police chase on Monday afternoon.
Sam Chavarria died from blunt force injuries, according to the Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office.
Fort Worth police officers initially responded shortly before 5 p.m. to a hit-and-run in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 30/West Freeway near Horne Street, according to a police news release.
The 911 caller told police that his car had been struck by another vehicle, and he was following it because the driver failed to stop after the accident, according to police.
Officers found the suspect vehicle and tried to stop Chavarria, who failed to yield, and officers briefly chased his car going east on Camp Bowie Boulevard, police said.
Investigators believe that Chavarria’s car hit a curb in the 3700 block of Camp Bowie, and he lost control and then crashed into a tree, police said.
Chavarria, who was the only person in the car, died at the scene. No other injuries were reported, police said.
The investigation of the incident is ongoing, according to police.
The crash was one of two on Monday in which a driver was killed while being pursued by Fort Worth police. Family members identified a man who died following a chase on I-35W as 28-year-old Kendrick Gibson.
Gibson’s family told Star-Telegram media partner WFAA-TV that they want answers about why police said his car was connected to an aggravated kidnapping case, and they want to see dashcam video from the traffic stop and pursuit.
