America’s population landscape is always changing. WalletHub recently set out to find the country’s most diverse cities.

In this study, diversity doesn’t just mean religion and race. It also attests to job types, languages, birthplaces, education and household sizes.

“Any place with a large enough population and economy to be considered a city is going to be diverse,” according to William Scarborough, Associate Professor of Sociology at the University of North Texas, who was cited in the study. “I cannot think of a type of diversity that would be bad for cities.”

In fact, he says that diversity in cities directly correlates with economic growth, because a mix of backgrounds spark a variety of ideas, creating more innovation in business, compared to businesses that have employees who all come from similar backgrounds.

Quality of life in diverse cities also increases, as residents can experience a variety of cultures by just visiting different neighborhoods.

Most Diverse Cities in the U.S. The most diverse cities in Texas

WalletHub’s study analyzed 500 of the largest American cities by population.

Both Silver Springs and Gaithersburg in Maryland rank as No. 1 and No. 2, respectively, as the most diverse cities in the country. But one North Texas city ranked No. 3.

Out of all the major Texas cities, these are the ones that rank as most diverse overall, according to WalletHub.

No. 3: ArlingtonNo. 5: Houston No. 12: DallasNo. 22: Fort Worth No. 93: San Antonio No. 98: Austin

According to the study, Arlington ranks as the third-most diverse in the country because of high social-economic diversity, high cultural diversity and high religious diversity.

Looking at data from the 2020 census, Arlington’s median household income was $65,481. Nearly 35 percent of the population is Caucasian, 30 percent is Hispanic and 20 percent is African American.

Methodology

The survey analyzed data on socioeconomic diversity, cultural diversity, economic diversity, household diversity and religious diversity across the 500 most-populated cities in the country.

Cities were divided into three categories– small (less than 100,000 residents), medium (between 100,000 and 300,000 residents) and large (more than 300,000 residents).

Arlington ranks No. 1 as the most diverse large city in America, with Houston at No. 2.
