For over twenty years, Tech fans have been throwing tortillas at football games and for the first time this past Saturday, it got the team a penalty flag.
It was big weekend for viral moments in college football. A large section of Oklahoma State fans went shirtless to motivate the team. Texas/OU is always a big deal, but an underrated story is that Texas Tech has officially been penalized for their decades long tradition.
Before this week, Tech coach Joey McQuire preached to the Red Raiders fans to only do one tortilla throw during the game. Here is how the rule works in the Big 12 this year. If your fans throw objects onto the field, you’re given a warning. If it continues, the team is then penalized fifteen yards. What Tech has been doing this year is a tortilla toss at opening kickoff and then one after the game is over. Looks like some fans on Saturday kept the tortillas going and cost the Red Raiders thirty yards in penalties.
Texas Tech getting penalized for the first time over the tortilla throwing is getting all the headlines. However, Kansas coach Lance Leipold said that a pocket knife was also thrown at one his coaches at some point in the third quarter, you can check out his press conference below.Â
We will wait and see if someone can get video footage of a pocket knife coming onto the field. We will see if Tech fans only do the tortillas at kickoff and following the conclusion of the games the rest of the season. Looks like the refs are ready to enforce this rule.
