Texas experiences worst February wildfire season since 2005

  • March 6, 2026

BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) – February 2026 marked the most active February on record for wildfire response in Texas since 2005, according to the Texas A&M Forest Service. The month also saw the fourth-highest number of acres burned for any February in the agency’s records.

The busy month put significant strain on state resources, with 530 firefighters deployed across the state to battle the flames. The response effort included 74 engines, 31 dozers, and 48 aircraft working to contain 258 separate wildfires that burned a combined 45,881 acres statewide.

“Our crews worked around the clock on initial attack, containment, and patrol operations to protect communities, infrastructure, and natural resources,” the Texas A&M Forest Service said in a statement.

March Could See Relief

While March is historically the busiest month of Texas’s dormant fire season, we will get at least some short term relief in a significant part of the state to start March. Increased moisture and earlier green-up across parts of the state should help reduce fire activity for the next couple weeks in the eastern half of the state.

For those in the Brazos Valley and other parts of Texas, the most widespread relief we’ve seen in months should arrive over the next week.

Residents are urged to stay prepared, stay aware, and stay informed about current wildfire conditions. For the latest updates on wildfire response and conditions across Texas, follow the Texas A&M Forest Service’s Incident Information page on Facebook, Twitter, or their website.
