The 20th annual Battle of the Lakes is set to commence this week as Austin, Texas-area rivals Lake Travis and Westlake face off. With just one loss between the two of them, the teams are vying for contention atop the Texas 6A Region IV District 26.
Lake Travis leads the regular-season series 11-8 all-time, according to the Austin Sports Journal, but Westlake has won both of the last two years — and repeated the feat in the playoffs, defeating Lake Travis in the quarterfinals of the UIL state championship both years. Westlake will go for five wins in a row on Friday night.

Westlake football: What to knowWith a 6-1 record and 3-0 in regional play, Westlake has outscored opponents by an average margin of about 45-13. Its only loss on the year has been to Prosper, a 29-22 season-opening loss.Westlake has allowed just 92 points through seven games this season, in large part through the efforts of senior defensive end Austin Knape, who’s leading the team with seven tackles for loss, five sacks and three forced fumbles.This will be Ole Miss quarterback commit Rees Wise’s fifth time playing against Lake Travis, according to The Austin American-Statesman, and he will fight to continue his winning streak against the Cavaliers. This year, he has completed 63.4% of his passes for 1,046 yards and seven touchdowns to four interceptions.Lake Travis football: What to knowLake Travis is 7-0 on the season and has scored more than 40 points in five of the games. They have also year to allow an opponent to score more than 21, and twice held their opponent to seven points or fewer.Quarterback Luke McBride has been very solid, passing for 1,595 yards and 15 touchdowns to five interceptions. The passing game is aided by Vann Hopping’s rushing output, as he has accumulated 751 yards and 17 touchdowns.On defense, Carter Buck may be the best EDGE rusher in the area.
