AUSTIN, Texas — A crash involving an 18-wheeler shut down northbound Interstate 35 in South Austin early Friday, sending one person to the hospital with serious injuries.

Austin Police Department officials said the crash happened on I-35 near the Slaughter exit before 4:30 a.m.

Police said the 18-wheeler driver was injured but not hospitalized. Another person was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.

It was not immediately clear how many vehicles were involved.

Northbound I-35 was expected to remain shut down for another hour as additional crews responded to assist.

Drivers were being directed to exit at Onion Creek and could not get back on I-35 until after Slaughter.

There is significant construction in the area.
