Northbound Interstate 35 in South Austin will close for two nights this weekend as crews continue work on the highway’s massive expansion.
The closures will affect the northbound main lanes of I-35 between Slaughter Lane and Ben White Boulevard (Texas 71) on Friday and Saturday nights starting at 11 p.m. The highway will reopen at 9 a.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. on Sunday. The closures will allow crews to safely work on the elevated lanes they are building as part of the Capital Express South project, according to the Texas Department of Transportation.
Drivers will be detoured onto the frontage roads during the closures. Northbound drivers on I-35 will use exit 228, continue through the intersection at Ben White, then re-enter the interstate at the next ramp. Those looking to connect with Ben White will exit the interstate and turn onto Ben White at the light.
TxDOT is urging motorists to stay alert and follow detour signs.
The $548 million I-35 Capital Express South project will add two high-occupancy-vehicle (HOV) lanes, commonly called carpool lanes, in each direction. A portion of the lanes will be elevated. The project is expected to wrap up in 2028.
