AUSTIN, Texas — Austin police have released new details about the deadly mass shooting on West Sixth Street that left three people dead and injured more than a dozen others.
Investigators shared body camera footage showing the chaotic moments when officers confronted the suspect, 53-year-old Ndiaga Diagne. Police say many of those shot early Sunday morning were standing outside bars when gunfire erupted. The video shows people running for cover, screaming, and hiding behind cars.
Madilyn Hernandez, a college student celebrating her birthday, says she was just steps away when the shooting began.

She and her friends were waiting outside to call an Uber when they heard the gunfire and ran back inside a nearby bar for safety.
“The bouncer was getting ready to close the doors,” Hernandez said. “I just locked eyes with him, I grabbed the door, and we just ran inside.”
Once inside, Hernandez says she and others dropped to the floor to protect themselves. “Just hearing the gunshot so loudly, I knew he was right there,” she said.
Police say Diagne first drove up to a crowd outside Buford’s and opened fire with a pistol as bars were closing. After parking nearby, he got out with an AR-15-style rifle and continued shooting as he walked down Sixth Street.
Officers eventually located the suspect and say he fired toward them. Three officers returned fire, striking and killing him.
Buford’s Bar plans to reopen Friday, March 6. In a statement, the bar said staff spent the past several days reflecting and supporting one another before deciding to return to work.
“To honor those affected, we will donate 100% of all sales from Friday, Saturday, and Sunday to the victims and families most impacted by this tragedy,” the statement read.
Buford’s also said it has been coordinating with law enforcement and city leadership to ensure a safe reopening, including an increased police presence at Sixth and Rio Grande and new safety measures such as protective glass along the beer garden.
