LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – After dense fog blanketed the region this morning through mid-morning hours, West Texas faces a new threat this afternoon: severe thunderstorms.

A few severe thunderstorms are forecast to develop Thursday afternoon, primarily across the northern half of West Texas. The main threats from any storms that develop will be very large hail, up to two inches in diameter, and damaging wind gusts up to 70 mph. An isolated tornado threat is also possible, particularly across the far southeastern Texas Panhandle and northern Rolling Plains (shown in orange below). Any tornadoes that do form may be difficult to see due to heavy rain and wind patterns.

Storms are expected to develop near mid-to-late afternoon as a warm front surges across the region. Temperatures will reach the mid-to-upper 70s with southerly winds increasing to 20-30 mph, creating an environment favorable for storm development.

Storms are expected to develop as early as 3 to 4 p.m. but most likely through the evening hours. A few elevated storms may linger overnight into Friday morning, but coverage should decrease before sunrise.
