LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Jasmine Perry discovered her calling at 18 with no formal plan, just a pair of hands and a belief that she had something to offer.
“I was 18 years old and looking for a way to make money, and I looked at my hands and said God gave me a gift,” Perry said.
Five years later, she’s opening Certified Hair Lounge, a family-operated barber and salon shop just blocks from where she was raised.
Perry’s connection to the building predates the grand opening. She worked in the same space under a previous salon owner before that arrangement ended, leading her to work at various locations around Lubbock.
Her family watched her persistence and decided to invest in her vision. When the building became available, they got to work converting it into a dual-purpose space with a barber side and a salon side.
“I grew up right down the street on 29th St, so it’s kind of just like home a little bit and it’s really a busy street and the way the building is set up, it’s perfect for a barber side and salon side,” Perry said.
Now working as a loctician and natural hair stylist with a growing client base, Perry is candid about what it took to reach this point.
“I definitely sacrificed the right things, I sacrificed partying, I sacrificed going out every weekend and I don’t want anyone that’s younger than me or even the same age or older than me to think that it was easy because it wasn’t,” Perry said.
The salon’s grand opening is set for March 14. Certified Hair Lounge is still seeking licensed stylists and barbers to join the team.
