Your Weather Planner

Friday afternoon, portions of North Texas, including Dallas and Fort Worth, were under a Tornado Watch until 10 p.m. The threat of strong and severe storms shifts to central Texas early Saturday and lasts through the afternoon. A cold front will push southward into South-Central Texas. The front will reduce the severe weather threat but enhance the likelihood of flooding. Rainfall totals as high as 3 to 4 inches are possible.

Today’s Big Stories

1. Attempted suicides, fights, pain: 911 calls reveal misery at ICE’s largest detention facility

The calls to 911 poured in from staff at Camp East Montana in Texas, the nation’s largest U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention facility, at a rate of nearly one a day for five months, each its own tale of pain and despair.

Camp East Montana looks like a pop up village, with six long tents along a stretch of the Chihuahuan Desert outside El Paso at the U.S. Army base Fort Bliss, once the site of an internment camp for Japanese Americans during World War II. Inside the hastily constructed camp, a series of communal living pods shelter thousands of immigrants in color-coded uniforms and Croc-style shoes.

But the stories of the conditions at the facility, revealed in data and recordings from more than a hundred 911 calls obtained by the The Associated Press — in addition to follow-up interviews and court filings — offer a disturbing portrait of overcrowding, medical neglect, malnutrition and emotional distress.

2. Buford’s to reopen, donate weekend sales to victims and families affected by Austin shooting

Buford’s, the site of a shooting that left three people dead and many more last week in Austin, announced plans to reopen with increased safety measures.

According to a statement posted to Instagram on Thursday, the bar will open Friday, March 6, at 6 p.m. with an increased police presence at 6th and Rio Grande streets. A portion of Rio Grande will be closed to through traffic from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m. on Friday and Saturday nights. Additional safety measures like protective glass will also be installed along the beer garden.

The bar is donating all sales from the weekend of March 6-8 to victims and families who were most impacted by the shooting.

3. Democratic attorney general primary heads to runoff with Johnson, Jaworski

State Sen. Nathan Johnson and former Galveston Mayor Joe Jaworski have both advanced to a runoff election in the Democratic primary for Texas attorney general.

Austin Police Department updates procedures after controversial deportation

An update to the Austin Police Department’s (APD) procedures outlines that officers are not required to contact U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) when a person is found to have an ICE administrative warrant if they have no other arrestable charge.

The update follows a controversial deportation from January, when a woman’s disturbance call to APD led to her detainment, alongside her 5-year-old child, who is a U.S. citizen. Â
