Warm week ahead before storm chances return

  • March 8, 2026

LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Saturday gave the South Plains a brief taste of what early March is supposed to feel like.

Highs in Lubbock topped out around 62 degrees, right in the neighborhood of the average high of about 65 degrees for this time of year. That calm won’t last long.

Sunday morning will be cool and mild with temperatures in the upper 30s with light winds. By the afternoon, temperatures will be headed sharply in the opposite direction increasing about 40 degrees from early morning temperatures.

Shifting winds will help boost those temperatures. Winds start out from the west southwest but expect a shift in direction this afternoon moving from the southwest.

Highs across the South Plains will top out around the mid-70s.

But the real heat arrives Monday as many areas will see highs in the 80s.

That warmth will come with a downside. Fire weather concerns will likely stretch from Sunday afternoon through at least Tuesday as dry air and gusty southwest winds settle across the region.

Southwest 15-20 mph and gusts up to 30 mph.

While the beginning of the week looks warm and dry for most, the weather pattern begins to change Monday night.

Those southwesterly winds early in the week will pull in moisture from the Gulf of Mexico.

At the same time, a developing storm system over northern Mexico will move closer to the region. That system, combined with a dryline likely setting up across the Rolling Plains, could help trigger scattered showers and thunderstorms late Monday night into Tuesday.

There’s still some uncertainty with the timing of that dryline. If it arrives earlier, it would support showers late Monday into early Tuesday.

But if it arrives slower, that could actually increase storm chances for Tuesday afternoon or evening.

Either way, once that system passes through Tuesday night, it will drag a cold front south across the South Plains on Wednesday which will cool temperatures noticeably by midweek.
