An 18-year-old, Darius DeWayne Hall, faces charges of capital murder after a fatal shooting in Houston led to a dramatic police chase and standoff, police say.
HOUSTON — An 18-year-old suspect is facing multiple charges, including capital murder, after a deadly shooting and police chase early Saturday morning, according to the Houston Police Department.
Investigators identified the suspect as Darius DeWayne Hall, 18. Court records show Hall is charged with capital murder, tampering with evidence and evading arrest.
Police say officers were first called around midnight to a shooting in northwest Houston on West 20th Street near Lawrence Street.
When officers arrived, they found a woman lying on a sidewalk with an apparent gunshot wound. She was taken to a hospital but later died from her injuries.
About an hour later, around 1 a.m., officers spotted Hall driving the victim’s stolen car, prompting a police chase. Authorities said the pursuit ended when the vehicle crashed along the Southwest Freeway near Buffalo Speedway.
Police said Hall ran from the crash, leading to an hours-long standoff at a nearby townhome community.
KHOU 11’s Michelle Choi spoke with residents who watched the situation unfold overnight.
“Lights went out, and I said, ‘Something’s going down,’” said resident Ken Knisely. “We could hear him on the megaphone, ‘Come on out, we’re not going to hurt you.’”
Knisely said neighbors anxiously waited as officers surrounded the area.
“I opened my door around 4:15 a.m., and there was an officer on his knees with a shield and one behind him with a gun pointing right down the stairs to that unit where they found him,” Knisely said. “They’re like, ‘It’s OK, just shut your door and go back in.’ Then I looked out my bedroom window and that’s when I saw the SWAT team.”
Police said Hall was taken into custody around 7 a.m. following the standoff.
Authorities have not yet released additional details about the victim as the investigation continues.
